107 Years of the American Legion: Why It Still Matters in Houston

On September 16, 1919, a group of World War I veterans gathered with a singular purpose: to ensure that those who served their country would never be forgotten, and never face the challenges of civilian life alone. Congress chartered the American Legion that day, and a movement was born.

One hundred and seven years later, that mission is alive and well — right here in Houston, Texas, at American Legion Post 560.

From the Trenches to the Community Hall

The American Legion was founded on four pillars: veterans affairs and rehabilitation, national security, Americanism, and children and youth. These weren't abstract ideals. They were practical commitments made by men who had seen war firsthand and understood what returning home really meant.

In the decades that followed, the Legion became one of the most powerful advocacy organizations in American history. The GI Bill — which sent millions of veterans to college and helped build the American middle class — was largely drafted and championed by the American Legion. VA hospitals, veterans' disability benefits, and countless community programs trace their roots to Legion advocacy.

Post 560: 80 Years in Houston

American Legion Post 560 was chartered in 1946, just as the Greatest Generation was coming home from World War II. For 80 years, Post 560 has been a cornerstone of Houston's veterans community — a place where service members from every branch and every era could find camaraderie, support, and a sense of belonging.

Today, Post 560 is home to the Sons of the American Legion (SAL) and the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA), extending the Legion family to the children, spouses, and descendants of veterans. Together, the Legion family at Post 560 runs community programs, honors fallen heroes at Legacy Plaza, hosts fundraisers, and keeps the doors open for anyone who needs them.

In an era when veterans' issues can feel distant from everyday life, American Legion Day — celebrated every September 16th — is a reminder that the work is never finished.

More than 200,000 veterans call the Houston area home. Many of them are navigating the VA system, dealing with service-connected disabilities, or simply looking for a community that understands what they've been through. The American Legion is there for all of them.
